View From the Pit 2016 – Week 4

Week 4 upon us already, that’s nearly a month since the excitement of the draft, seems a long time ago now, there’s already been well over 60 transactions – over a third of our drafted players have been cut and new blood picked up. A couple of season ending injuries have shifted things about a bit too. Week 3 saw a massive game with the Falcons putting up 45 massive points – not many songs about Atlanta – plenty about Georgia of course – but a quick dig on youtube discovered this:

Falcons on Top, Falcons gonna win – wow, that is lame, can anyone write a decent sports anthem? – better than that Jets Lenny Kravitz one though? – and this video does have cheerleaders in it – so there’s that.

Back to the action.

Hate to tell you guys, but there is no simple maths to protect you any more, with week 3 fixtures there were no teams guaranteed to be 3-0 or 0-3 – but that is what we’ve ended up with. Its getting late for the Quakes and the Avengers – but still time to rescue those seasons, so lets take a look at their chances.

STOP THE PRESS,

I’ve written this over 2 nights, as I frantically remembered to put my waiver requests in last night, not that I should have bothered as Jimmy has gone for broke with Doug Baldwin. $86! Thats a big play and we’ll see how it pans out come week 7 when he may be back in action. It will certainly liven up everyone else’s waiver bids as anything over $5 is guaranteed to stop Jimmy at least!

Earthquakes at Jaguars

0-3 Earlston Earthquakes, who hope to end their 3 game losing streak, challenge the 3-0 Jimmy’s Jerman Jaguars at Greendale Stadium.

Earthquakes were led in week 3 by a 18.70 point effort fromMark Ingram. Earthquakes can expect a 17.29 point effort from Joe Flacco in week 4.

Jaguars were led in week 3 by a 32.50 point effort fromMarvin Jones. Jaguars can expect a 18.89 point effort from Blake Bortles in week 4.

This week sees a top to bottom tussle. As in previous seasons Cozy is leaving it a little late to start whereas Jimmy is straight out of the traps with waivers and trades galore. Although The Quakes have not really had a good run yet- there is a glimmer of hope as there were a whole heap of points left on the bench last week, where Jimmy has been playing the Jags pretty much to the limit. Chris needs to see some good waiver or trade action this week as without it Jimmy’s stellar WR trio will surely do some damage – you’d expect 3 TDs at least between them. Chris’s problem may be deciding who to leave out again from Decker, Crabtree and Sanders as they are group together real snug in the consensus rankings at 23, 24,25. Decker has a poor matchup where Sanders has a pretty good one, that might help the decision, but it will be a tough call. There is room to maneuver in both kicker and DST this week too – so we may see some big changes.

Jimmy doesn’t maybe need to work on his team too much this week – but that never usually stops him so look out for some more roster changes tomorrow . Its likely that RB will be the place that the Jags try to bolster, as its there that they are much weaker than at WR. (Well that didn’t pan out did it)

So, for the rest of the leagues sake, can the Earthquakes make the earth move under Jimmy. As of tonight it doesn’t look likely, but anything is possible. The Pit has to go with the numbers right now though – and on that basis its a win for the Jags.

Earlston Earthquakes hold a 3-2-0 all-time series record against Jimmy’s Jerman Jaguars.

Game to watch: Well of course everyone else in the league will be hoping that Doug Baldwin’s leg is still fecked, but its the Dolphins at Bengals Thursday night  game that will set the tone for this matchup – Chis needs to hope for a couple of Fins pickoffs that were heading to AJ Green. The Dolphins have a good history in the matchup and the game tends to be low scoring, which suits Chris better. To be in with a chance, Chis needs AJ Green to be held to less than 8 and the Dolphins DST to get over 12.

Bohemians at Avengers

1-2 Earlstonian Bohemians face off against the 0-3 Kelsae Avengers at Samuel Sawyer Memorial Park.

Bohemians were led in week 3 by a 14.02 point effort from Russell Wilson. Bohemians can expect a 18.82 point effort from Russell Wilson in week 4.

Avengers were led in week 3 by a 23.10 point effort from David Johnson, Avengers can expect a 25.56 point effort from Cam Newton in week 4.

Avengers are another team that’s just not got moving so far, there’s been a few bench points but last week the usually reliable Cam Newton was possibly the main cause of Stuart’s woes. That and Jimmy Graham getting straight back to it with 15 bench points. Ally has let his lineup choices slip a little too, Legarette Blount would have made a decent dent in the scorecard last week, but he was benched.

The big news for this game is the return of Leveon Bell though, Ally will now be hoping that his star RB can make good on his promise to deliver 10 weeks of consistency after serving a suspension. As long as he’s been training hard we should see him slot right back in to the  Steelers offense, which could boost stats for a few other players too. Stuart can compete with Bell though – David Johnson is the star back in Atlanta and has proven his worth as a top pick so far.

Allys RB depth is almost too much – you cannae play em all Ally, and no doubt there will be a couple of TDs from the bench, Ally just has to hope that most of them come from whichever 3 backs he ends up going with. Stuarts selection process will be a little easier. with a couple of players on bye weeks WR must be just about sewn up along with a resurgent Jimmy Graham at TE.

This one could go either way but even with their bye week woes, it should be time for the Avengers to get their first win of the season.

Game to watch – its got to be the Hawks at the Jets in the Sunday Early game. Ally will want a lead from the Jets, putting a dent in the DST  score for Stuart but also encouraging Russel Wilson to throw long, preferably past Jimmy Graham, who doesn’t seem ready for long plays just yet. If it goes the other way and Seattle stifle the Jets early on – its game over for Ally’s Bohos.

Pirates at Fog

3-0 Tweedbank Pirates, who hope to extend their 3 game winning streak, face off against the 1-2 Fog on the Tyne at New St James Park.

Pirates were led in week 3 by a 26.50 point effort from Matthew Stafford. Pirates can expect a 21.27 point effort from Matthew Stafford in week 4.

Fog were led in week 3 by a 26.70 point effort from Devonta Freeman. In addition, Michael Floyd was not injured before the start of his week 3 game, and contributed 6.50 points, but he’s listed as questionable in week 4 due to a concussion, which might severely limit his fantasy production.Fog can expect a 15.51 point effort from Derek Carr in week 4.

Fog have had 1 decent week sandwiched between a couple of real dodgy ones. Coach Stuart has not been the most active on the Waivers, having to recruit a backup TE for a week and grabbing a sleeper RB. However, that could just be because he has a solid all round team. With Gronk back in the mix anything is possible, though he was hled to no points on the weekend. Stuart has to hope for some redzone touches for any of his outfield players and a couple of lucky breaks because Paul’s QB, RBs and WRs are all ranked considerably higher. The reality of that is that is its works out at about 15 -20 yards for each position, or about 7-10 pts overall, so 2 ‘bonus’ TDs are required to even that out. We all know that is well within the possibilities of any of our teams .

Will it happen is the question. Paul is riding a massive winning streak (though perhaps a little lucky in week 2) but breaking down those numbers we can see that all of his players have been pretty inconsistent – no outfield player has scored more than 10in all three games (to be fair not many teams can claim this, but it does demonstrate that in a poor week , when the TDs don’t go your way you need players who can get 80-100 yds, not just 30-40.

I’m getting bogged down there in maths I can’t actually be bothered to do, and of course the rankings already take that into account, but in this game, though Fogs team are rated lower, I do think they have a good chance to score more overall TDs than Pirates and so the pit goes with the Fog.

In the 3-year history of this rivalry, Tweedbank Pirates hold a 1-3-0 all-time series record against Fog on the Tyne.

Game to watch – there’s not much action between the teams, so its every man for himself here. Stuart will have an eye on the Pats Bills game for sure whereas Paul will probably want most of his many screens in action to keep track.

69ers at Pickaxe

1-2 SanFran-Gordon 69ers face off against the 3-0 Nitten Pickaxe at New Victoria Park.

69ers were led in week 3 by a 23.10 point effort from Christine Michael. 69ers can expect a 15.79 point effort from Andrew Luck in week 4.

Pickaxe were led in week 3 by a 21.70 point effort from Jeremy Hill. In addition, Matt Ryan was not injured before the start of his week 3 game, and contributed 19.90 points, but he’s listed as questionable in week 4 due to an injured thumb , which might severely limit his fantasy production. Pickaxe can expect a 18.52 point effort from Ben Roethlisberger.

Neck on the line time, this could be the highest scoring game of the week. As I keep banging on about, this is a game with more than average chances of TDs, with 5 or more outfield TDs possible on both sides – we wont see 10 between the 2 teams though – so where they fall will decide the match.

Kenneth Dixon doesn’t quite look ready to return to action – though if he does, even for a few snaps, it could give coach Gav a chance to access whether he is still worth stashing 4 games in. Zek Elliot showed a bit more promise last week, grinding out a good 16 pts with no TDs, hopefully we’ve seen the end of his fumbles.

69ers have been pretty unlucky to be at 1-2, with only week 3 seeing them drop below the regulation 95 pts. Demarco ?Murray is one of the few players who has managed to keep a consistent score above 14 pts, and there’s no likelihood of that stopping this week. He’s ranked a couple of places below Zeke, but that’s maybe 5 or 6 yards in the grand scheme of things, so nothing to worry about for Richie. Its WR that could do with a bit of a boost this week  for Richie, though Julio Jones could maybe do enough on his own I guess.

All in this is a close game, but the pit is going for the Pickaxe to go 4-0

In the 3-year history of this rivalry, SanFran-Gordon 69ers hold a 1-3-0 all-time series record against Nitten Pickaxe.

Game to Watch – again across the 2 teams thers not much in the way of conflict – maybe Riche will set himself up for a Sunday afternoon watching the London Game. Andrew Luck and Adam Vinatieri could both have a good game, but the kickers pts can of course be more limited if Luck gets the ball in the end zone every time. As usual for Gav its Dallas who hold the draw in a Sunday later game, Zeke and Dez have not had a great game together yet – and maybe that’s unlikely but against the 49ers anything is possible.

187s at Panthers

2-1 Kelso 187’s face off against the 1-2 Pilton Panthers at Pilton Park.

187’s were led in week 3 by a 14.00 point effort from Eli Manning. In addition, Chris Ivory was not injured before the start of his week 3 game, and contributed 2.30 points, but he’s listed as questionable in week 4 due to an injured lower leg , which might severely limit his fantasy production. 187’s can expect a 18.46 point effort from Eli Manning in week 4.

Panthers were led in week 3 by a 35.00 point effort from the Kansas City Chiefs Defensive Team. In addition, Jarvis Landry was not injured before the start of his week 3 game, and contributed 19.60 points, but he's listed as questionable in week 4 due to an injured shoulder , which might severely limit his fantasy production. Panthers can expect a 21.05 point effort from Philip Rivers in week 4.

You read that right 35 points for a DST – 6 interceptions and 2 TDs – is that a league high for DST? In any case, it probably wont happen again for a wee while, everyone else in the league just glad it wasn’t them and coach Ally of the Bohos not too bothered as even a negative score for the chiefs would still have been enough last week.

Looks like Rab is sticking with Rivers at QB this week, which the stats say is a good idea, he’s ranked number 2 this week by many folk. However, that’s about the only highlight for the Panthers, 187s pip them in rankings at nearly every outfield spot. Dennis Pitta is a lone exception, but even then, Kyle Rudolph for the 187s is not far behind. Jordy Nelson and Mason Crosby on bye weeks is going to hurt Rab, but there is potential for scores within the roster this week, Rivers could be in for a great game against a less than effective saints D, McCoy and Coleman at RB have a good chance for 2 TDs between them and Jarvis Landry may have hit a hot streak with a couple of 100yd games.

On the other side the 187s bring the big guns. Coach Euan is electing to stay with Eli Manning despite some less than stellar scores over 3 weeks, but surely a bigger game is to come, perhaps not this week against the Vikings, he doesn’t go till Monday though – so there could still be a change. Beckham and Benjamin at WR have been erratic, but both have huge ceilings, and coming off a zero point game he has a point to prove in Atlanta. Maybe Sterling Shepard will get the start, he’s been holding the ammunition for the 187s so far this season, but has more than 10 pts in every game so far, a tough choice between him and Will Fuller maybe? Dan Bailey and the Bengals look locked in for this week and Euan is unlikely to find much more on the wire.

There could be a surprise, but the stats say the 187s by 20 pts ish, and that is where the smart money goes this week.

In the 2-year history of this rivalry, Kelso 187’s hold a 0-2-0 all-time series record against Pilton Panthers.

Game to watch – Chargers Saints in the Sunday later game, Rab needs Rivers to be throwing, where Euan wants the opposite so  Melvin Gordon can run, so this game could be the deciding factor. Philip Rivers is on the verge of a hidden record – if he throws one more pass (caught or not) without a pick that will be 100 to open the season, which will be an NFL record.

Fire at Tigers

2-1 Fife Fire play the 1-2 Tranent Tigers at Polson Park.

Fire were led in week 3 by a 25.94 point effort from Drew Brees. Fire can expect a 20.45 point effort from Drew Brees in week 4.

Tigers were led in week 3 by a 26.50 point effort from Jameis Winston. In addition, Jeremy Langford was not injured before the start of his week 3 game, and contributed 4.60 points, but he’s listed as doubtful in week 4 due to an injured ankle , which might severely limit his fantasy production. Tigers can expect a 15.67 point effort from Jameis Winston in week 4.

Tom Brady is still sitting out there in suspended animation, but the Pats are doing quite well without him thanks very much, which could be a worry for Nicky even when he does return, but who needs him anyway when Jameis Winston is putting up 22 pts a game with no problem? Antonio Brown and Alshon Jeffrey and Demaryius Thomas on paper should be a WR dream team, but again, all of them have dipped below the regulation 10 pts so far. Long TDs will win you games, but they cannot be relied upon week in week out, and it shows for Nicky leaving him well below 100 for the last 2 weeks.

Meanwhile Fire may get some of their fuel back if Willie Snead and Delanie Walker come back from injury this week – there’s no guarantee of either of those, but they are not listed as ‘out’ so there’s hope. Drew Brees had an off week in week 2 but bounced back and has a reasonable matchup against the chargers Sunday later game. Hyde and Riddick should really get more points on the board than Nicky’s RB team, Shaun perhaps needs to worry a little more about his receivers, who after DeAndre Hopkins are looking a little on the thin side this week, if snead and Walker are not back there could be a problem. Shaun does not want to be reliant on a kicker, but if he’s within 5 points by Monday morning then Blair Walsh will see him safe on Monday night football.

However, with those injuries and Winston on a bit of a roll, this week its hard to see past Nicky’s Tigers.

Game to watch – not a lot happening between the teams, but perhaps Nicky will have an eye on the Late Chiefs Steelers Game where star WR Antonio Brown is up against a Chiefs Defense that picked off 6 times and scored 2 TDs last week, though even if that happens again, it will only force Big Ben to throw even more – could be interesting? For Shaun he can pick and chose his games to watch

and that’s yer lot,

View From The Pit 2016 – Week 3

Week 3 is here and as always that means there are some teams yet to make their mark. Don’t be too downhearted though boys, plenty of time left. There simply has to be at last a couple of teams on 0-2  at this stage, and a few of them have gone on to the playoffs if I remember.

Week 2’s standout NFL team were the Carolina Panthers with 46 whole points again. Of course we could have gone with one of the numerous songs called ‘Carolina’, a quick youtube scan finds that Shaggy’s version is not even the worst of those, but who can resist an excuse for Steel Panther’s  Death To All But Metal (NSFW)

The one thing you really cannot control is your opponent’s score and it seems to be that those teams that make the playoffs quite often have the lowest points against scores. We can see that Richie’s 69ers have suffered a bit with 224 pts against so far and sit at 0-2 whilst Gav’s Pickaxe have only faced 144 pts and are 2 to the good thanks to that.

There’s no teams guaranteed to go 3-0 or 0-3 this week, and more than one division will be hoping that things start to even out – any of the current divisional leaders going 3-0 would be a bit of a problem for the rest of their division – all 4 of those games are divisional.

We’ll start with the  teams who need to get moving

Jaguars at Avengers

2-0 Jimmy’s Jerman Jaguars challenge the 0-2 Kelsae Avengers at Samuel Sawyer Memorial Park.

The Rest of the league will be willing on a bit on vengeance in this game, can Stuart’s A team start to deliver?
Jaguars were led in week 2 by a 23.00 point effort from the Arizona Cardinals Defensive Team. Jaguars can expect a 20.15 point effort from DeAngelo Williams in week 3.

Avengers were led in week 2 by a 30.82 point effort from Cam Newton. In addition, Virgil Green was not injured before the start of his week 2 game, and contributed 4.60 points, but he’s listed as questionable in week 3 due to an injured calf , which might severely limit his fantasy production.  Avengers can expect a 22.36 point effort from Cam Newton in week 3.

Stuart is perhaps learning the heard way that a couple of studs don’t make a team, Cam Newton and David Johnson have both performed to their #1 billing or thereabouts, but its the rest of the team that has been lacking. Benching Stefon Diggs for week 2 is a memory best forgotten too, might have beens will not get you very far. Lineup choice is key for Stuart as he seems to have a lot of low floor high ceiling players, and their matchups will be key all season – this week the choice may be between TJ Yeldon and Matt Jones at RB2 for example – they are ranked #30 and #31 on Fantasypros, and I wouldn’t want to call it.

For Jimmy, the lineup choices must be fairly straightforward, whichever lucky few he’s decided to keep that week – the new waiver rules haven’t dampened the Jags desire for new blood at every opportunity. Jimmy has a distinct advantage at WR and  TE with a range of receivers that will inevitably leave a stud on the bench, but will it be the right one?

In any case, even though Cam has a tougher game this week and His RB selection could be a stab in the dark, its week 3 that the Avengers will get back on track with a win over the Jags.

Panthers at Bohemians

0-2 Pilton Panthers challenge the 1-1 Earlstonian Bohemians at Bohemian Park.
Panthers were led in week 2 by a 24.80 point effort from Philip Rivers. In addition,Thomas Rawls was not injured before the start of his week 2 game, and contributed 0.80 points, but he’s listed as questionable in week 3 due to an injured leg , which might severely limit his fantasy production.  Panthers can expect a 18.13 point effort from Philip Rivers in week 3

Bohemians were led in week 2 by a 18.30 point effort from LeGarrette Blount, In addition, Donte Moncrief was not injured before the start of his week 2 game, and contributed 0.90 points, but he’s listed as questionable in week 3 due to an injured neck , which might severely limit his fantasy production. Bohemians can expect a 14.91 point effort from Russell Wilson in week 3.

In the 3-year history of this rivalry, Pilton Panthers hold a 2-3-0 all-time series record against Earlstonian Bohemians.

Rab’s coaching decisions last week could have given Rab the win – nearly 25 pts were left on the bench, more than enough to overhaul the Tigers , who only had a couple of pts on the bench. This week looks to be some easier decisions, Rawls could be banged up again and Rab should be looking elsewhere for his starters. WR will stay similar to last week , though danny Amendola’s rogue good week could put a spanner in the works, maybe….

For Ally, the good news is that there is potential in the squad – but it has to be used, 40+ pts left on the bench last week is a sting. Fantasy isn’t everything though so lets hope things settle and allow the commish to spend a few hard earned minutes picking the team.

WR and DST are the problems for Ally, though there’s been talk of trades during the week, so WR may not be such a problem come sunday afternoon. If that changes, and Ally keeps the right RBs it’s his to lose, however as it stands today Rab has the better team for week 3 and the Pit goes with the Panthers

EarthQuakes at Pirates

0-2 Earlston Earthquakes play the 2-0 Tweedbank Pirates at Gun Knowe Stadium.
Earthquakes were led in week 2 by a 18.60 point effort from Eric Decker. In addition, Adrian Peterson was not injured before the start of his week 2 game, and contributed 2.60 points, but he’s listed as questionable in week 3 due to an injured knee , which might severely limit his fantasy production. Earthquakes can expect a 17.95 point effort from Joe Flacco in week 3.

Pirates were led in week 2 by a 15.50 point effort from Matthew Stafford. In addition, Rashad Jennings was not injured before the start of his week 2 game, and contributed 4.00 points, but he’s listed as questionable in week 3 due to an injured hand , which might severely limit his fantasy production.  Pirates can expect a 17.30 point effort from Matthew Stafford in week 3.

In the 3-year history of this rivalry, Earlston Earthquakes hold a 4-2-0 all-time series record against Tweedbank Pirates.

Earthquakes had a bit of a disaster against Pickaxe last weekend, injuries to 2 starting RB’s could put a stop to the playoff run – literally before its even started. However, Cozy wisely invested in Jerrick McKinnon as backup for Adrian Peterson  and Mark Ingram is no slouch either. Eric Decker is coming off a hot week and may continue to be a very solid WR2 for the Quakes. The big decision for Cozy this week is whether to drop any injured studs in order to pick up a backup – there’s going to be some interest on the waiver wire this week , but both Peterson and  Stewart are only going to be out for a couple of weeks tops, so are they droppable?

Pirates were the beneficiaries in a close call battle with the Bohemians last week and will look to make the best of that divisional victory by sealing the first divisional round with a win here. Matt Stafford didn’t have his best week last weekend, but look to him to bounce back with a solid 20 pts against the packers, it won’t be a 30 pointer but should still see him as the backbone of this Pirates team. CJ Anderson and Todd Gurley look to have RB sewn up for Pirates, and why not, as they are both ranked top 10 this week. WR is maybe a little harder to pick – though there are certainly some big scores to be had between the 6 of them – which 3 you gonna pick?

There will be some forced changes for Cozy, but as things stand the Pit cannot go anywhere but overboard on the Pirates – a win for Paul.

69ers at 187’s

0-2 SanFran-Gordon 69ers play the 2-0 Kelso 187’s at Compton Palace.
69ers were led in week 2 by a 24.32 point effort from Carson Palmer.  In addition, Julio Jones was not injured before the start of his week 2 game, and contributed 16.60points, but he’s listed as questionable in week 3 due to an injured undisclosed , which might severely limit his fantasy production.  69ers can expect a 17.40 point effort from Carson Palmer in week 3.

187’s were led in week 2 by a 22.80 point effort from Kelvin Benjamin.  In addition, Ameer Abdullah was not injured before the start of his week 2 game, and contributed 3.80 points, but he’s listed as questionable in week 3 due to an injured foot , which might severely limit his fantasy production. 187’s can expect a 19.28 point effort from Eli Manning in week 3,

Richie wasn’t quite up to the challenge of taking on the 2014 and 15 champ, and will regret leaving Corey coleman on the bench, as he’ll likely not get another shot at  a big game till Josh McCown is back. Christine Michaels may get another chance at flex this week, after seemingly becoming the best of a bad lot in Seattle, but he’s got some competition from Giovani Bernard, who had a big game too and may becoming the Bengals starter – I’m not sure I’d want the decision – of course you could always go for a high upshot Wide instead.

Eli Manning will probably get the nod over Dak Prescott this week for Euan, even if last weeks scores suggest otherwise. The Cowboys offence just isn’t settled enough and Manning’s relatively low score was simply because there were no TDs. Euan went big with a 10 buck purchase of Will Fuller off the wire during the week – that paid off as he got more than his regulation 10 without a TD. Both those are good omens for the rest of the year, if you can get by with a no TD QB and a 100 yd receiver at flex then you are well on your way to the playoffs I’d say.

All in all though, this week could be a high scoring battle – If the 187s can add some TDs to their already bug enough yards, then they could take the game, but the stats show it as a more likely win for Richie, and that’s the way we are going.

In the 2-year history of this rivalry, SanFran-Gordon 69ers hold a 1-3-0 all-time series record against Kelso 187’s.

Pickaxe at Tigers

2-0 Nitten Pickaxe play the 1-1 Tranent Tigers at Polson Park.
Pickaxe were led in week 2 by a 19.76 point effort from Ben Roethlisberger, who got by the Cincinnati Bengals defense for 259 passing yards and 3 passing TDs in addition to 14 rushing yards. Pickaxe can expect a 22.75 point effort from Ben Roethlisberger in week 3.

Tigers were led in week 2 by a 22.00 point effort from the Denver Broncos Defensive Team.  Tigers can expect a 17.74 point effort from Jameis Winston in week 3.

Things are looking good for Pickaxe, but there’s some hidden issues. Coach Gav has ridden his luck a wee bit with the lowest points against score. 2 solid weeks of 96 pts with a few left on the bench is  ok, but a 120 pt monster week hasn’t looked likely yet. This week Big Ben has a tougher matchup against the Eagles, but hopefully it wont be raining, so he may get a bit more action going. Zeke Elliot has a bit of a case of the drops – but still 10 pts in the bad each week is nothing to sniff at, though his talk of breaking the rookie rushing record seems a long way away now. Devante Parker seems to be back in action for the Fins and that could make for interesting decisions come game time this week for Pickaxe.

Coach Nicky is still waiting for Tom Brady to serve out that suspension, Jameis Winston Aced it in week 1 but came thudding to a stop last week  – showing the quality needed to make a week in week out QB like Brady – the experience goes a long way. Jamaal Charles fitness could make or break this tie – if he’s in and fully fit it will make maybe 10 pts worth of difference to the final score, however if he’s not available its slim pickings for the Tigers, Chris Thompson perhaps being the punt as he’s a receiving back, giving more options for a breakout TD? No such issues at WR where it will be business as usual for Brown and Jeffrey, though Brown coming off his worst game since 2012.

All in all, this game will come down to fitness to play, a game time injury anywhere in either lineup will be crucial. Pickaxe have the edge with slightly less to worry about and the Pit goes with them this week.

In the 2-year history of this rivalry, Nitten Pickaxe hold a 2-2-0 all-time series record against Tranent Tigers.

Fire at Fog

1-1 Fife Fire challenge the 1-1 Fog on the Tyne at New St James Park.

In the only all square battle of the week one of these teams will be able to cement their pace as on pace for the playoffs, they are both 1-1 in their respective divisions, so wont be topping the division come tuesday morning, nevertheless another crucial game.
Fire were led in week 2 by a 17.30 point effort from DeAndre Hopkins. In addition, Doug Baldwin was not injured before the start of his week 2 game, and contributed 2.00 points, but he’s listed as questionable in week 3 due to an injured knee , which might severely limit his fantasy production.  Fire can expect a 20.78 point effort from Drew Brees in week 3.

Fog  were led in week 2 by a 28.90 point effort from Matt Forte. In addition, Danny Woodhead was not injured before the start of his week 2 game, and contributed 3.10 points, but he’s now on the injured reserve, which will prevent him from contributing at all this week. Fog can expect a 17.57 point effort from Derek Carr in week 3.

Picking 2 top 5 QBs might seem like a good idea at the time, but will inevitably leave you with a dilemma who to pick come game time, so far Shaun has picked his 50 50 bets wrong twice, who knows who he’ll go for this week – perhaps a trade for one of these guys in on the cards? In any case, even points on the bench are points your opponenets cant score, so its a pretty poor excuse for a problem. Shaun went WR heavy and that shows here, expect 30 points between Deandre Hopkins and Willie Snead at least.

Stuart has the best of it at RB though – Matt Forte and Devonta Freeman could match those WR scores from Fire.

Where does that leave the match up then? it comes down to whether Shaun’s second tier RBs or Stuarts second tier WRs will do the job. Stuart may want to take a gamble on Gronk being fit, which would leave him a player to drop for the waivers tomorrow – but most of the big names on the waivers are RBs anyway, where he is still strong.

It will come down to a couple of big plays, a couple of 30 yarders or a TD from the secondary players would nail this one. The pit thinks that is a bit more likely from Stuarts WR team, so we are going with the Fog for this one.

View From The Pit 2016 week 2

So how was it for you? Week one is done and all that draft preparation is either being sealed in your mind as genius tips for next year or forgotten about as you frantically scour the waiver wire.

Anyway, in a new feature for 2016 I’ll be picking tunes based on the scores of the week, in fact I lucked out when the Lions scored 39 pts last week, as it was this song that made me wonder whether there was a tune for every NFL team – probably yes – answers on a postcard. However, little did I know that this youtube gem exists, KISS and Scooby Doo – what’s not to like?

With our new blind bid waiver system in place there were perhaps a few lost and lonely stars who were wondering why they weren’t getting a spot in an effl team,  midweek  I thought that I could maybe get a pretty good team out of our locked players in week one; let’s take a look.

  • QB Kirk Cousins 9.96
  • RB Darren Sproles.  3.6
  • RB Dion Lewis.   0
  • WR Will Fuller 16.7
  • WR Chris Hogan    12
  • TE Will Tye   1.6
  • Flex Michael Thomas 5.8
  • K no kicker dropped so best available kicker Jason Myers.  13
  • DST Seahawks.  9
So, all in not the worst team you could have picked in week 1 by a long way. 71.66 pts, which, unfortunately for Rab is not the lowest score of the week. I can’t see this happening that often, but clearly with the locking of players there will be unplayed stars in every week. How many in the league were looking at these guys on Thursday and Friday, maybe some of them will get snatched up in the waivers tomorrow. Of course there were players still on the waivers who scored even higher than this – but since any of us could of grabbed them they don’t count!

You’ve all no doubt scrolled past this crap anyway, so lets get on with the previews. We’ll start with the two games that will unfortunatley leave at least 2 of our coaches facing 0-2

Tigers at Panthers

0-1 Tranent Tigers play the 0-1 Pilton Panthers at Pilton Park.

The shatner divisional kitty showdown.
For once the bot is right! “We’re coming off a heartbreaking loss,” Tranent Tigers coach Nicky said. losing with a top 3 score in the week – and over 110 to boot has got to be a kick in the teeth for Nicky, heartening to see the team perform though. Tigers were led in week 1 by a 25.54 point effort from Jameis Winston, who got by the Atlanta Falcons defense for 281 passing yards and 4 passing TDs in addition to 3 rushing yards. Julius Thomas listed as questionable in week 2 due to an injured ankle , which might severely limit his fantasy production.  Tranent Tigers can expect a 18.24 point effort from Jameis Winston in week 2,

Panthers were at the other end of the results table – and Rab has to pick up the pace to avoid a disatrous divisional start to the season.Panthers were led in week 1 by a 14.62 point effort from Philip Rivers, who got by the Kansas City Chiefs defense for 243 passing yards and 1 passing TD in addition to 9 rushing yards. Panthers can expect a 19.65 point effort from Philip Rivers in week 2.

Tranent Tigers hold a 0-4-0 all-time series record against Pilton Panthers, so history is on Rab’s side, but surely that record cannot last forever? Nicky has a big advantage at WR with Brown and Jeffery both in the top 10 – but that’s about the only area he can boast any distance over Rab. Antonio Brown certainly showed why he was ADP #1 this year but can that run of form continue? at least 1 TD is likely, possibly more. Jamaal Charles looks to be out, and Rab really needs to take advantage of that gap with his RBs. The Pit predicts that overall yardage between the teams will be similar, but that the Panthers have more chances for TDs and so its a win for the Panthers.

Avengers at Fog

0-1 Kelsae Avengers challenge the 0-1 Fog on the Tyne at New St James Park.

Both of these teams failed to trouble the 90 pt barrier last week, and paid the price with a week one loss. Is that just an anomaly or will we see some serious waiver wire action tomorrow morning from Stuart and Stuart?
Avengers were led in week 1 by a 21.16 point effort from Cam Newton, who snuck past the Denver Broncos defense for 194 passing yards and 1 passing TD in addition to 54 rushing yards.Avengers can expect a 23.20 point effort from Cam Newton in week 2

Fog were led in week 1 by a 22.36 point effort from Derek Carr, who beat the New Orleans Saints defense for 319 passing yards and 1 passing TD in addition to 16 rushing yards. In addition,Charles Clay was not injured before the start of his week 1 game, and contributed 4.00 points, but he’s listed as questionable in week 2 due to an injured knee , which might severely limit his fantasy production. Fog can expect a 16.60 point effort from Derek Carr in week 2.

Cam Newton is still the number one QB, despite getting knocked every which way last week. There’s a few possible outcomes, but coach Stuart has to hope that concussion isn’t one of them. Penalties might help the Panthers offense, but a concussion to Cam could end more than coach Stuart’s season – sort it out NFL! elsewhere Avengers have a #1 RB too in David Johnson this week , Matt Forte and Devonta Freeman will have some hard work to match his score between them. The Gronk is still out, hurting Stuarts lineup in more ways than one as he is forced to drop a flex player to pick up a TE – don’t be surprised if it’s a new one in the morning either. Luck just isn’t with the Fog this week, and really its hard to see past the Avengers sealing the game with just Cam and Johnson, as long as the rest of the team get an average of 7 -8 a piece, the pit really cant see this game going to Tyneside.

At the other end of the league – there’s a couple of games that will  see early leaders developing with at least 2 teams going 2-0

Pirates at Bohemians

1-0 Tweedbank Pirates challenge the 1-0 Earlstonian Bohemians at Bohemian Park.

A divisional clash will see a real contender for a playoff berth appear in Kirk Division.

Pirates were led in week 1 by a 26.10 point effort from Matthew Stafford, who beat the Indianapolis Colts defense for 340 passing yards and 3 passing TDs in addition to 5 rushing yards. Pirates can expect a 18.89 point effort from Matthew Stafford in week 2.

Bohemians were led in week 1 by a 25.90 point effort from Spencer Ware, who snuck past the San Diego Chargers defense for 70 rushing yards and 1 rushing TD in addition to 129 receiving yards. Bohemians can expect a 22.45 point effort from Russell Wilson in week 2.

Overall EFFL #1 pick TOdd Gurley really did nothing to prove he was worth that status in week 1. I guess we all suspect coach Paul will give him a couple more weeks to prove his worth at least – but there must be a few nerves there, especially given the score that the #2 pick Antonio Brown put up. There’s really nothing to choose between the 4 key RBs for these teams, probably 4-5 TDs between them, and it will really be the luck of the draw which way they fall.

At WR it is a different story, coach Ally really went RB heavy and that shows here, with just a #30 ranked wideout as the best pick this week. Still 3 top 10 RBs to pick from should give him some solace – that should be 18 pts plus TDs in the bag.

Paul has the slight advantage in ranking players, and the internet says that it is a wide receiver year, Gurley has a point to prove too – so I’m going with the Pirates for this clash, could be close tho.

This is the first game between these two franchises in 2016, and is sure to be a classic showdown. In the 3-year history of this rivalry, Tweedbank Pirates hold a 4-4-0 all-time series record against Earlstonian Bohemians.

187’s at Fire

1-0 Kelso 187’s challenge the 1-0 Fife Fire at Balbirnie Stadium.

The TJ Hooker divisional scintillating sibling showdown.
187’s were led in week 1 by a 18.28 point effort from Eli Manning, who got by the Dallas Cowboys defense for 207 passing yards and 3 passing TDs. In addition, Keenan Allen was not injured before the start of his week 1 game, and contributed 6.30 points, but he’s now on the injured reserve, which will prevent him from contributing at all this week. 187’s can expect a 19.30 point effort from Eli Manningin week 2.

Fire were led in week 1 by a 23.56 point effort from Aaron Rodgers, who snuck past the Jacksonville Jaguars defense for 199 passing yards and 2 passing TDs in addition to 16 rushing yards.Fire can expect a 20.61 point effort from Aaron Rodgers in week 2.

Brotherly love eh? Not quite – there will be blood for sure but will it be bullet holes or burns come Tuesday morning?

Shaun got a full house in the Pickem’s last week, so maybe he knows a thing or too, mind you maybe he’s just lucky. He certainly bagged a few stars in the draft with a healthy 11 pts last week – enough to top most games most weeks. Martin and Hyde should continue to score this week, noting in particular that Doug Martin scored near his regulation 10 pts last week without a TD. !87s are a bit WR heavy but they should still see a few yards, even if no TDs from Abdullah and Gordon. Odell Beckham could be the one to watch this week – those attention grabbing full stretch 1 handers are something, but its being a position to use that athleticism and some chemistry with the QB that really matters for fantasy pts, last weeks stats don’t look good, but look to him maybe doubling that in week 2. Will it be enough though? Not at the moment – but look to Euan using the waiver wire tomorrow – a season ending injury to Keenan Allen is a problem, but at least it means he can be dropped with no worry that he’ll score for someone else in week 3, and there are some WR worth looking at.

All in its a win for the Shaun’s Fire – but Euan could spend some of those scare waiver dollars to boost his chances

And finishing up with a couple of games that have no guaranteed outcome:
Pickaxe at Earthquakes

1-0 Nitten Pickaxe play the 0-1 Earlston Earthquakes at The Cauldie.

This inter divisional showdown sees both the leagues earth movers in action, will the axe fall or the ground shake? lets find out.
Pickaxe were led in week 1 by a 27.40 point effort from Brandin Cooks, who beat the Oakland Raiders defense for 143 receiving yards and 2 receiving TDs in addition to 11 rushing yards. Pickaxe can expect a 17.19 point effort from Ben Roethlisberger in week 2,

Earthquakes were led in week 1 by a 15.70 point effort from Amari Cooper, who beat the New Orleans Saints defense for 137 receiving yards. Earthquakes can expect a 16.17 point effort from Tyrod Taylor in week 2.

The quakes struggled to get started in week 1, and coach Cozy will look for improvements but coach Gav won with his Pickaxe team with just the 6th highest score of the week, so there’s certainly room for improvement there. RB is the quake strength and Cozy can pick on 3 strong top 12 players to be the core of the team for week 2. Its QB where we might see a change, Tyrod Taylor looked a reasonable bet last week, but really failed to dent the scoreline at all for Cozy – we may see a change there tomorrow morning as there are maybe 10 QBs around who have a chance to triple Taylors week 1 score. Amari Copper and Dwayne Allen were the only quakes to really get the job done in week 1 so look to them to remain at the core.

For Pickaxe, Brandin Cooks was really the only thing that kept coach Gav in the Game, under scores for Dez Bryant and Zeke Elliot were not a good sign for the rnd 1 and 2 pickaxe picks. Coach Gav will probably give them at least another shot – Elliot has promised to break the rookie run record, and he’ll need to do better than 50 yds a game to do that, but perhaps the preseason hype was just that. Big Ben stayed cool under pressure on Monday night and delivered a very solid 20 pts, looks likely Gav will stay with him and TE Greg Olsen.

For this weeks clash it could be RB that make the difference for Cozy – if his Rbs can get some TDs it may be game over. However, only onme of Gavs receiver team need have a great game to turn that around, and that’s the way the pit goes this week.

Nitten Pickaxe hold a 3-1-0 all-time series record against Earlston Earthquakes.

69ers at Jaguars

0-1 SanFran-Gordon 69ers play the 1-0 Jimmy’s Jerman Jaguars at Greendale Stadium.

Last but not least its Richies chance to take 2 time winner Jimmy down a peg.
69ers were led in week 1 by a 35.50 point effort fromAndrew Luck, who tore apart the Detroit Lions defense for 385 passing yards and 4 passing TDs in addition to 21 rushing yards. In addition, Julio Jones was not injured before the start of his week 1 game, and contributed 12.60 points, but he’s listed as questionable in week 2 due to an injured ankle , which might severely limit his fantasy production.  69ers can expect a 19.56 point effort from Andrew Luck in week 2

Jaguars were led in week 1 by a 29.10 point effort from DeAngelo Williams, who beat the Washington Redskins defense for 143 rushing yards and 2 rushing TDs in addition to 28 receiving yards. Jaguars can expect a 18.68 point effort from Blake Bortles in week 2

history is against the rest of the league – Richie has never won this tussle yet.

Luck got a monster score for Richie last week, and the 69ers were unlucky to lose with the 5th highest score of the week, and well over 100. Can that form continue for Luck against the Broncos? maybe, but Carson Palmer is also a good bet for the week – so there could eb a tough decision for Richie come Wednesday night.

Jimmy lucked out in week 1 (as usual eh?) with both an RB and a WR over 24 pts, but look at those 50 pts and ‘only’ 18 pts were from TDs, without which would still give them a respectable 18 pts each – this pair are definitely ones to watch in the next few weeks, and Jimmy’s opponents have to hope  that there is a TD drought for both of them.

Richie doesn’t look to have an RB who is likely to trouble those numbers, but WRs Julio Jones and Brandon Marshall could have a brace each this week, which we have to say the rest of the league is hoping for.

It looks close, but for the sake of the league, the pit is going with the 69ers this time.

that’s your lot – see you next week

View from the pit 2016 week one

The draft is done for another year, no rookies this time and an upgrade to both our competitiveness and our tech meant there was a lot of heads down looking at devices.
Much as some folk will be secretly, or not so secretly  thinking they’ve got a steal there somewhere, its a long season, and there’s no team immune from a year changing injury, not always for the worse.

This year also sees a resident league ‘bad guy’: You’ve naw been away fae hame that lang that ye cannae mind that nae’in likes a smart erse, eh Jimmy? Anyhow, with rules changed away from ‘fast or last’ waivers, we’ll see if it makes any difference. The pressure is off one team with their name on the trophy before the jjj’s so pick it up the rest of you!

With no rookies and rule changes to a slightly more serious league – lets hope we can all cope with the pressure.

Let’s get down to it then, untouchable glory awaits

Its derby week in the league with both the 2 earlston  and the 2 kelso teams against each other. We’ve also got last seasons lowest placed teams in action so at least one of them is starting with a loss.

 Bohemians at  Earthquakes

Earlstonian Bohemians play the Earlston Earthquakes at The Cauldie.

Our first derby game will see one of these coaches take the lead in what has been an even battle over the last 3 years.

Earlston Earthquakes can expect a 16.22 point effort from Tyrod Taylor in week 1, who is expected to sneak past the Baltimore Ravens defense for 178.24 passing yards and 1.11 passing TDs in addition to 41.11 rushing yards.

Coach Ally, , who went RB heavy in the draft made his one exception in the first 7 rounds to take QB Russel Wilson, expect him to put a big dent in the Scoreboard this week with the Seahawks hosting the Dolphins.

Elsewhere in this matchup its pretty close, Ally has a choice of his 6 RBs but that’s left him a little open at WR, Amari Cooper should light up the Earthquakes side of the board at that position.

All in its pretty close, but the pit gives it to the Bohos this time.

Tigers at Pirates

Tranent Tigers challenge the 0-0 Tweedbank Pirates at Gun Knowe Stadium.

A tough week for these two bottom of 2015 teams, but a big incentive to salvage some pride and show that 2015 was just a ‘blip’

These teams have met just twice and its one a piece, with honour to salvage for both coaches from last year, neither of them will want to start with a loss- but that’s the way its going to have to be.

Tranent Tigers can expect a 17.80 point effort from Jameis Winston in week 1, who is expected to get by the Atlanta Falcons defense for 263.35 passing yards and 1.32 passing TDs in addition to 14.3 rushing yards.

Tweedbank Pirates can expect a 18.05 point effort from Matthew Stafford in week 1, who is expected to get by the Indianapolis Colts defense for 272.64 passing yards and 1.83 passing TDs in addition to 8.08 rushing yards.

Tigers went with an autodraft on Saturday, which produced some ‘interesting decisions’ but there is depth at every position, though i guess we’ll not be surprised if there are some wavers on Wednesday morning. Coach Paul on the other hand went against most of the internet and chose an RB, Todd Gurley, with pick one of the draft. its not all that surprising as Paul had to wait a whole 22 picks before his next chance at a running back but we’ll see if that decision to pass on a star Wideout comes back to haunt him.

MFL gives it to the Pirates by 5 or so (note to coaches, gonnae submit at least a tentative lineup on monday, makes this a load easier as its all on one page!) but looking a bit deeper that doesn’t give any of the wideouts a whole TD except Antonio  Brown for Nicky – I suspect there will be at least a couple and its a case of which side of the fence they fall. Nicky looks to be struggling the most at flex, and that really could be his downfall this week.

For that reason the pit is giving it to the Pirates for week 1, but sneaky touchdowns could really mess with that.

Panthers at Pickaxe

In this Shatner divisional clash 0-0 Pilton Panthers challenge the 0-0 Nitten Pickaxe at New Victoria Park.

Nitten Pickaxe can expect a 20.33 point effort from Ben Roethlisberger in week 1, who is expected to beat the Washington Redskins defense for 337.31 passing yards and 1.86 passing TDs in addition to 2.57 rushing yards.

No Lineup is yet in pace for the Panthers, but we suspect that Pip Rivers will be leading them out, a tough matchup against the Kansas DST though and Big Ben should set the balance in coach Gav’s favour at QB.

Elsewhere in the lineups its fairly balanced, perhaps a slight advantage at Wide Receiver for Gav. Coach Rab will be asking for some fortunate TDs from his outfield players, Gary Barnidge could deliver a surprise at the Eagles.

All in though the outfield is balanced, Rab has an advantage at DST but it will be Big Ben who brings home the bacon for a pickaxe win this week.

Fife Fire at San Fran Gordon 69ers

69ers coach Richie has been all over the chat with excuses (ahem) ‘reasons’ why making the playoffs is no big deal. Coach Shaun has stayed quiet on that one, but with his first year behind him is it time for the fire to really get started?

Aaron rogers is a good start – he’s top ranked QB this week against the Jaguars. Richie is not far behind with Andrew Luck hosting the Lions, he’s third top of play  callers for week 1

Its pretty balanced across the board,  a slight advantage at RB for Fire and WR for 69ers. but flex and kicker could be the death of Shaun’s Fire, where Richie has a bigger advantage.

The Panthers DST could end up saving the day for Fire, and of course they are first up on Friday morning, so either way we should have a good indication of where this game is going before the weekend.

Richie’s Julio Jones is number one ranked WR for the week, and a couple of long TDs for him would put this game out of reach. Brandon Marshall also has a good chance to put some numbers up for the niners. De Andre Hopkins for the fire wont be far behind though – at least in yards

with Doug Martin and Eddie Lacy at respective RB spots, there’s some guaranteed points on both sides too.

Steven Hauschka has saved more than one game over the last 3 years, and that could eb how it goes this time, the pit is going with the 69ers to start their playoff run, not that Richie cares about that of course!

187s at Avengers

Kelso 187’s face off against the  Kelsae Avengers at Samuel Sawyer Memorial Park.

Our second ‘derby’ game of the week sees the Kelso Rivals, will the Avengers ‘Iron men’ be able to fend of the hail of bullets from the 187s

Unfortunately, MFL puts this as a pretty low scoring game, that’s good news for the coaches though as it means Euan or Stuart can sneak a win here. MFL has a problem though, like the Tigers Pirates game there’s less than a whole TD for the Avengers Wideouts or the 197 RBs, there must be a couple between the 5 of them surely?

Can Newton for the Avengers and OBJ for the 187s are the stars though – Stuart being unhappy with any less than 20 and Euan with under 15 for OBJ – if either of them fail to reach those targets it could be goodnight for their respective team. Cam and kicker Brandon McManus are up Friday morning for Stuart so that could set him up for the weekend, and of course the pairing of QB and opposition kicker allows them both to score big…

Kelso 187’s can expect a 16.52 point effort from Eli Manning in week 1, who is expected to get by the Dallas Cowboys defense for 258.41 passing yards and 1.91 passing TDs in addition to 2.86 rushing yards.

Kelsae Avengers can expect a 23.09 point effort from Cam Newton in week 1, who is expected to get by the Denver Broncos defense for 238.75 passing yards and 1.78 passing TDs in addition to 43.17 rushing yards.

MFL gives it to the 187s by a point or 2, it wont be that close, but I thin, there will be some TDs for Manning, Beckham and Watkins and I don think the Avengers can keep up – its a win for 187s.

Fog  at  Jaguars

Fog on the Tyne challenge Jimmy’s Jerman Jaguars at Greendale Stadium.

Stuart has the unenviable task of taking on the Jags and helping the rest of the league by putting them to the sword in week 1 – history doesn’t help – it’s 1-6 to the Jags

Jimmy has landed a host of Wide receivers this year and and theres at least 4 worth a punt as starters this week, his RB places look to be well covered by players well within the top 25 for the week.

Stuart will be asking a lot of Derek Carr at QB, and to have any chance this week he’s going to have to top JJJ’s Blake Bortles by 7-10 pts. Devonta Freeman could help as well, after mining a massive seam of TDs over a few weeks last season he went a bit quiet towards the end – the internet seems a bit undecided on his prospects, lets hope for the leagues sake that he can pull a couple out of the bag.

Fog on the Tyne can expect a 18.71 point effort from Derek Carr in week 1, who is expected to get by the New Orleans Saints defense for 279.66 passing yards and 2.04 passing TDs in addition to 7.46 rushing yards.

Rob gronkowski has been the only TE worth drafting before the 5th round for a number of years now, can he continue in 2016 for Fog – we’ll see, but the Pit is backing the Gronk all the way  – its a win for Fog this week.
